Stone-Carved Primate Skull
Stone, 7"L x 5"H
A remarkable sculpture of a primate skull probably from Borneo, likely serving a ceremonial purpose for head-hunting rituals. Similar examples of carved human skulls are found throughout tribal Indonesian cultures but primate images appear less common. Probably 19th century or earlier. On a custom-built stand.
Provenance:
Reportedly from the collection of a Dutch colonialist stationed in Singapore in the early 20th century
