Introduction to “Moti Mentali”

Moti Mentali – or movements of the mind – references a Renaissance concept most prominently associated with the writings of Leonardo da Vinci. It relates to the artist’s ability to portray the intentions of the subject and capture the interior thoughts through expression and gesture. The concept, however, does not need to be confined to the arts. Exploring how our mind grapples with the essence of a thing or idea seems equally a propos. I don’t think Leonardo would object. So with that broad canvas as cover, I will devote the ensuing entries to the far humbler musings of my mind, covering the arts, antiques, collecting and collections.
